Women Inspiring Girls (WIGS)

WIGS (Women Inspiring GirlS) for young ladies ages 13-18, is designed to promote confidence, respect, and positive behavior using a nonjudgmental focus on positive, strength-based strategies.  Participants will not only explore the problems resulting in bad behavior but will also learn the tools and skills to make meaningful, lasting change in their lives.  In addition to the youth intervention curriculum there will be planned group activities, field trips, and community service activities. 


According to the Sentencing Policy Institute:

  • Over the past quarter century, there has been a profound change in the involvement of women within the criminal justice system.

  • Female incarcerated population stands over seven times higher than in 1980.  Between 1980 and 2019, the number of incarcerated women increased by more than 700%, rising from a total of 26,378 in 1980 to 222,455 in 2019. 

  • More than 60% of women in state prisons have a child under the age of 18. 

  • There are 1.2 million women under the supervision of the criminal justice system

  • In 2019, imprisonment rate for African American women (83 per 100,000) was over 1.7 times the rate of imprisonment for white women (48 per 100,000).  Latinx women were imprisoned at 1.3 times the rate of white women (63 vs 48 per 100,000).

  • Since 2000, the rate of imprisonment for African American women has been declining, while the rate of imprisonment for white and Latinx women has increased.

  • Idaho has the highest rate of female incarceration; Massachusetts has the lowest.  Of the top 20 states with the highest rate of female incarceration, Virginia is #19.

WIGS Program Objectives are to:

  • Develop future leaders who learn to embrace education and career pursuits

  • Increase Emotional Intelligence and strengthen Interpersonal communications

  • Cultivate positive attitude and promote positive social media

  • Increase financial literacy


Our goal/theme for 2022 is for the young ladies to create their own path of success and to devise a plan to get there. 

  • We will empower them to use their voice, positively, in their decision-making processes.

  • We will strengthen their desire to seek higher education opportunities through goal setting.

  • We will increase their thirst for knowledge to increase their learning capability and growth process

  • We will provide evidence and strength-based life skills to effect positive change and continuous quality improvement strategies, and social skills to improve communications and connectedness to build healthy relationships.

  • Through group coaching and mentoring they will learn critical thinking skills and new ways of presenting themselves to their peers and others.
