It has been six months since the Virginia Department of Corrections (VA DOC) Oversight Committee began its work in partnership with the Office of the State Inspector General (OSIG) and the VA DOC Ombudsman.

I am honored to serve on this committee as the nonprofit representative for prisoner advocacy, and I do not take this responsibility lightly. My mission is to advocate for meaningful policy and systemic change that ensures fair and humane treatment for your loved ones. I understand the urgency, and while change will take time, I am committed to pressing forward with determination and purpose.

Since my appointment, the committee has visited two state correctional facilities: State Farm and, most recently, Red Onion on Monday, June 9, 2025. This visit was prompted by numerous complaints from families regarding the treatment of incarcerated individuals at Red Onion. We spoke with both staff and many of the inmates. I assured them, and I assure you, that I will follow up on their concerns. And I will.

Please continue to share your concerns with the VA DOC Ombudsman and OSIG. Your voice is essential, and your input helps guide our oversight efforts. When submitting concerns, please be as specific as possible to help ensure appropriate follow-up.
